Howdy!  My name is Makayla.  I am from Edna, Texas and have lived here for almost my entire life.  I discovered the desire to nurture animals at an extremely early age.  Family photographs show me sitting on horseback with my dad as an infant and riding “Blue” as early as two years old.   I have been raised on a ranch all of my life.  My parents, Michael and Jackie McLeod, own and operate McLeod Ranch.  At any given point, you will find on our ranch over a dozen species of animals.  These include longhorn cattle, horses and ponies, goats, sheep, turkeys and various farm birds.

I first met Dr. Aaron and Whitney Wilfert during a school tour hosted by Whitney.  Annually, she invited the Edna Christian Academy to tour the veterinary facilities, meet and greet the veterinarians and “role-play” as little veterinarians.  I remember telling Dr. Wilfert that I wanted to work for him “when I grew up!  I have been working at the Jackson County Veterinary Clinic for five (5) years in which the first few months I “job shadowed” Dr. Wilfert to further my interests in veterinary medicine.

Our family uses our love and knowledge of animals in our own ministry by providing a petting zoo and horseback riding for children at our church, First Pentecostal Church of Edna.  Currently, I am instilling my love for these animals and my dedication to children’s ministries by mentoring Dr. and Mrs. Wilfert’s youngest child, Laurel, for one hour a week at the ranch, helping her with her speech and language through animal therapy.

I graduated Valedictorian of my 2010 Class of Edna Christian Academy.  I am currently enrolled at the Cedar Valley College in Dallas, Texas.  I am attending online courses to become a Registered Veterinary Technician.
